About the role

This course is designed to prepare teachers of science in the Intermediate division (Grades 7-10). It explores the teaching of selected units in all four strands from the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum guideline. Attention is paid to the skills of lesson planning, laboratory techniques, teaching strategies, and assessment and resources, through workshops, lectures and lab activities.

Key contexts considered in this course include:

• Environmental Education and sustainability as outlined in Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow (a policy document on Environmental Education and ways to infuse Environment and Sustainability education into classrooms)
• Equity and Inclusive Education in Ontario Schools, 2009 (guidelines for addressing biases, barriers, and power dynamics that limit students' prospects)
• Growing Success, 2010 (seven fundamental principles for instructional decisions)
• Connecting the Dots (Key Learning Strategies for Environmental Education, Citizenship, and Sustainability, involving students as engaged learners within their communities)

Pay

As of September 1, 2026, the minimum stipend is $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay) for a half credit course. As of January 1, 2027, the minimum stipend remains $9972.475 (inclusive of vacation pay). Salary may be prorated based on the appointment percentage.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, organize, and teach this graduate course
• Be available to students seeking assistance between classes
• Evaluate and provide students with feedback on their work
• Attend a pre-course planning/preparation meeting with the course instructional team
• Attend MT All-Instructor Meetings (AIM)
• Submit course syllabus as requested by the department

Requirements

• Possess a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience
• Demonstrate currency and mastery in the course subject matter
• Demonstrate excellence in teaching, including online teaching as relevant
• Demonstrate evidence of knowledge and practice of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion
• Demonstrate excellence in teaching and leading teachers/teacher-candidates professional learning

Qualifications

An Ontario Teaching certificate is an asset.
