About the role

Hussmann’s team of Technicians maintain, diagnose, and repair HVAC/R in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities. As a leader, you will oversee a team of service technicians in a specified geographic area or project/customer assignment, ensuring customer needs for service and maintenance of refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems are met.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain excellent customer relations.
  • Be fluent in applicable customer systems, business processes, and administrative support.
  • Actively pursue personal development and support technician growth and development.
  • Participate in screening, interviewing, and hiring new technicians.
  • Perform surveys of new customer sites and assist in quoting service and maintenance under the direction of the Service Manager.
  • Assist with job quoting, staffing, estimating, and understanding project costing and drivers.
  • Implement training and provide opportunities for ongoing professional development for technicians.
  • Coordinate technical support, guidance, and training to service technicians.
  • Resolve conflicts, solve problems, and prioritize among technicians, peers, leadership, and customers.
  • Champion change initiatives across the enterprise.
  • Coach and mentor newer team members to ensure compliance with systems and processes.
  • Perform prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers.
  • Partner with other technicians for the start-up of new refrigeration equipment.
  • Understand workplace efficiencies and their relation to company profitability; resolve customer warranty issues rapidly and accurately.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other technicians and lead HVAC/R PM programs.
  • Match customer needs with potential sales opportunities and assist in providing material and labor estimates for service and repair jobs.
  • Complete necessary documents (work tickets and timesheets) and electronic communication thoroughly, accurately, professionally, and timely.
  • Manage truck inventory: order, receive, bill out, and maintain parts responsibly with minimal waste.
  • Manage assigned vehicle within company guidelines, maintain cleanliness, and perform required maintenance on time.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of advanced electrical and mechanical repairs, HVAC maintenance and repairs, EMS programming, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Interpret advanced wiring diagrams and complex schematic diagrams to meet customer needs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment on complex service calls.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of compressor operating parameters, oil differential pressure valves, and oil level controls.
  • Understand low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, new retail store refrigeration startup, air flow characteristics and testing, motor VFD’s, and advanced wiring diagrams.
  • Perform system refrigerant and oil conversions.
  • Understanding of CO2 refrigeration strongly preferred.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required). HVAC-R Technical School Degree (preferred).
  • External Candidates: 10 years in the field or 7 years with Certification from a Technical School.
  • Internal Candidates: 7 years of experience with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment.
  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record in accordance with the Fleet Policy.
  • Physically able to walk distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds repetitively and for extended periods.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; detail-oriented and highly motivated.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration and/or commercial refrigeration and HVAC (preferred).
  • Strong leadership skills, communication skills, and business acumen.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Superior decision-making ability and paperwork skills.
  • Able to schedule work for other technicians.
  • Able to correctly teach all previously listed technical items.
