Job Requirements
The hybrid Service Tech/Delivery Driver is responsible for driving a propane delivery truck (bobtail) and filling tanks at the sites of our residential, commercial, and industrial customers. In addition, the role will mentor with local leadership learning service processes. Service Technician/Delivery Drivers work closely with our customers and meet safety and customer service standards to ensure the best experience.
Position Responsibilities
- Delivery Operations: Complete daily propane deliveries to local customers, following a pre-determined route and communicating any necessary route changes or issues directly to the manager. Record deliveries, meter readings, and tank percentages accurately via tablet. Inspect vehicle at the start of each day and notify manager of needed equipment, supplies, or routine maintenance.
- Tank Delivery and Placement: Transport propane tanks to customer sites using a company vehicle, carefully maneuver and position tanks in designated areas, including lifting and setting tanks using appropriate equipment.
- Excavation and Trenching: Dig trenches for underground propane lines, ensuring proper depth and distance according to local codes.
- Piping Installation: Cut, measure, and install propane lines, connecting them to the tank and appliances using appropriate fittings and techniques.
- Leak Detection and Testing: Thoroughly inspect all connections for leaks using leak detection tools, and perform pressure tests to ensure system integrity.
- Customer Interaction: Explain installation details to customers, answer questions about propane usage and safety procedures, and address any concerns. Communicate effectively with your team regarding delivery schedules and any issues encountered. Respond to emergency delivery requests as needed.
- Safety Compliance: Comply with all DOT and state regulations regarding hazardous materials transportation. Educate customers on safe practices related to propane. Ensure safety through prefill inspections, customer awareness, and system testing. Wear required safety gear including protective clothing and equipment. Report any safety concerns or incidents immediately. Maintain proper knowledge of propane handling procedures and emergency response protocols. Obey traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
- Drive vehicles with capacities under three tons to transport materials to and from specified destinations, such as railroad stations, plants, residences, offices, or within industrial yards. Maintain records, such as vehicle logs, records of cargo, or billing statements, in accordance with regulations. Inspect and maintain vehicle supplies and equipment, such as gas, oil, water, tires, lights, or brakes, to ensure that vehicles are in proper working condition. Report any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles. Perform emergency repairs, such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, tire chains, or spark plugs. Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to bases or other vehicles, using telephones or mobile two-way radios.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid CDL-A or CDL-B
- Valid Tanker and Hazmat Endorsements
- Clean driving record and ability to pass DOT physical examinations
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to perform minor vehicle maintenance checks
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to interact with customers professionally
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in various weather conditions
- Availability to work on-call rotations as needed (includes evenings and weekends)
- Previous propane experience is not required
