Sergeant SECURITY ATTENDANT III

About the role

Grade CO0005. Located at Maryland Department of Health, Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, Jessup, MD. This is a lead‑level security position responsible for the security and care of patients with behavioral health diagnoses who are not criminally responsible for felonies or are too violent for regular hospital/residential settings and deemed dangerous to themselves or others. The position works day, evening, night, or rotating shifts and is subject to call‑in during emergencies or staffing shortages. Employees may be required to move and position patients or apply physical restraints.

Responsibilities

• Assign, review, and approve the work of lower‑level Security Attendants.
• Train lower‑level Security Attendants.
• Provide security and care for patients in behavioral health settings.
• Move and position patients as needed.
• Apply physical restraints when required.
• Respond to call‑in situations during emergencies or staffing shortages.

Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
• Experience: Two years of experience providing security to patients, inmates, or youths committed by courts to psychiatric hospitals, correctional facilities, or juvenile detention centers.
• Experience substitution: U.S. Armed Forces military service as a non‑commissioned officer in Correctional Officer/Specialist classifications or Internment/Resettlement Specialist and Correctional specialty codes may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
• Licenses: Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license; ability to obtain appropriate class license for operating large vans if required.
• Special requirements: U.S. citizenship or resident alien status; at least 21 years of age; successful background investigation; oral interview; physical examination; ability to provide a reachable telephone number; subject to substance abuse testing; must complete Correctional Officer training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission during probationary period.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include experience in crisis intervention and experience in logbook keeping.
