Sergeant - GPH (#013560) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit, and the supervision, custody and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
• Supervises job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.
• Assists in conducting briefings with officers at the beginning of shift.
• Keeps subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Makes random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
• Makes routine inspections of work areas and all security devices and equipment to ensure duty performance standards are met and that all devices, doors, and equipment are in proper working order.
• Assists in conducting counts.
• Investigates complaints.
• Performs duties of the housing lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Maintains OSHA and safety standards.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma and relevant experience (State of South Carolina minimum requirement).
• A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• High school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work (SCDC minimum requirement).
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy.
• Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
