Sergeant - GPH (#014208) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit, and the supervision, custody, and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
• Supervise job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assist with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, and counseling.
• Assist in conducting briefings with officers at the beginning of shift.
• Keep subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Make random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
• Make routine inspections of work areas and all security devices and equipment to ensure duty performance standards are met and that all devices, doors, and equipment are in proper working order.
• Assist in conducting counts.
• Investigate complaints.
• Perform duties of the Housing Lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Maintain OSHA and safety standards.
• Successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• SCDC Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work. A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

This position is for GPH (General Population Housing).
