Sergeant (#010543) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Job Responsibilities

• Supervise security personnel and inmates assigned to the unit.
• Assist with the preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, counseling, etc.
• Make unannounced inspections of the unit to ensure proper duty performance.
• Conduct briefings and training sessions for all security personnel.
• Conduct routine and unscheduled inspections of the unit, security devices, and gates for cleanliness, serviceability, and accountability.
• Ensure the unit meets all safety and OSHA standards.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct.
• Mediate to resolve conflicts at the lowest level.
• Assist in conducting all counts and make written reports as needed.

Requirements

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• Eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Qualifications

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
