Sergeant (#014896) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Supervise security personnel and control inmates assigned to the unit under the direction of the Shift Lieutenant.
• Assist with preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, and counseling.
• Conduct unannounced inspections to ensure subordinate security staff perform duties properly.
• Provide briefings and training for all security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Perform routine scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the unit, security devices, and gates for cleanliness, serviceability, and accountability.
• Ensure the unit meets all safety and OSHA standards.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct and mediate to resolve issues at the lowest level.
• Assist in conducting all counts and prepare written reports as needed or required.
• Successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Eighteen (18) months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of hire.
