Sergeant (#011162) Kirkland Correctional Institution, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Under supervision of the shift Lieutenant, responsible for overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit and supervision and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
• Assist with preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, counseling, etc.
• Make unannounced inspections of the unit to ensure subordinate security staff are performing duties properly.
• Responsible for briefings and training of all security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Make routine scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the unit, security devices and gates for cleanliness, serviceability, and accountability, and ensure that the unit meets all safety and OSHA standards.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct.
• Mediate to resolve at lowest level.
• Assist in conducting all counts and make written reports as needed and/or required.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• SCDC Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work. A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
