About the role
The Senior Transportation Engineer, Branch Chief, Project Initiation, plays a crucial role in overseeing transportation development activities within the State of California. This position is responsible for supervising engineers, planners, and others involved in transportation projects.
Responsibilities
- Supervise engineers, planners, and others engaged in transportation development activities.
- Assign and supervise the preparation, formulation, coordination, and review of transportation-related engineering studies and reports.
- Give direction, provide technical support, and manage project schedules and Project Initiation Document Workplans.
- Participate in District and Statewide initiatives related to programming, engineering, project development, and planning activities.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess a Professional Engineer (PE) License and a valid driver’s license. They must also complete a standard State application (Examination/Employment Application STD 678) and Statement of Qualifications (SOQ).
Qualifications
The Project Initiation Branch interacts with local partners in advancing Capital Improvement Projects impacting Caltrans facilities through their Oversight program. Candidates should describe their past experiences in coordinating projects with local agencies and their innovative leadership skills in managing high-performance teams.
Skills
Technical expertise in integrating safe, sustainable, and innovative transportation solutions among cross-functional disciplines is essential. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to achieve the goals of the Department's long-term planning documents.
Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary range of $11,437.00 - $14,315.00 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. The work location is Orange County, with a hybrid telework option.

The starting salary for this position is $11,437.00 annually, subject to change based on the successful completion of the examination and meeting the minimum qualifications.
Schedule
This is a permanent, full-time position with a hybrid work schedule, combining both remote and office-based work.
