About the role

The incumbent serves as the Traffic Safety Devices Specialist under the general direction of the Office Chief of Safety Systems and Devices. Key responsibilities include establishing guidelines and standards for traffic safety systems, providing guidance for the application of safety systems, conducting new product evaluations, approving the use of proprietary products, developing and maintaining policies, guidelines, Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and non-standard Special Provisions for Traffic Safety Devices, and supporting districts with utilizing traffic safety devices and techniques to implement a Safe System Approach on the State Highway System.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes guidelines and standards for traffic safety systems
  • Provides guidance for the application of safety systems
  • Conducts new product evaluations and approves the use of proprietary products on the State Highway System
  • Develops and maintains policies, guidelines, Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and non-standard Special Provisions for Traffic Safety Devices
  • Serves as a resource for districts regarding Traffic Safety Devices and Systems through training and the Traffic Safety System Guidance Manual
  • Supports the Division of Road Safety and districts with utilizing traffic safety devices and techniques to implement a Safe System Approach on the State Highway System
  • Ensures uniform standards for regional partners and local roads

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, along with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in traffic engineering, including experience in traffic safety devices and systems. Additionally, candidates must hold a valid California Driver's License and be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.

Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the Classification Specification. These qualifications include possession of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, along with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in traffic engineering, including experience in traffic safety devices and systems. Candidates must also hold a valid California Driver's License and be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.

Skills

Strong skills in developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, and technical guidance documents, such as the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) or similar documents are essential. Proficiency in project management, communication, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders is also required.

Benefits

The position offers competitive compensation, including a salary range of $11,437.00 - $14,315.00 A, dependent on experience. Additional benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.

Pay

The starting salary for this position is $11,437.00 per year, with potential for growth based on experience and performance.

Schedule

This position is a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work arrangements. Employees are expected to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs and may be required to travel for business purposes.
