Senior Sonographer - Radiology - (0800-1630 or 0930-1800) Downtown Campus

About the role

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown is seeking a Sonographer, Pay Grade 5, or Sr. Sonographer, Pay Grade 7, based on qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the instruction of co-workers and students as required.
• Participates in teaching, evaluating, and advising fellows, residents, and medical students.
• Performs complex procedures at an advanced level requiring independent judgment and initiative.
• Completes required continuing education to maintain ARDMS certification.
• Coordinates procedures with nursing units, referring offices, and within the Radiology department.
• Interviews patients and records medical history relative to ultrasound examinations.
• Identifies, accesses, and prepares medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
• Maintains all equipment by safe, cautious, and proper use, communicating any malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
• Prepares patients and determines technical factors to be used in ultrasound examinations.
• Provides for care and protection of patients during procedures, assuming care for the emotional, psychological, and physical needs while adhering to The Joint Commission patient safety goals.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Certified by ARDMS within 1.5 months of hire.
• Board-eligible or RVT certified by ARDMS within 1.5 months of hire.
• Certified in BCLS within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications

• CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.
• Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or other nationally recognized accreditation organizations for primary specialty.
• Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience providing clinical education to students and sonographers and residents.

Skills

• Ability to perform complex procedures independently.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
• Proficiency in using medical equipment and software.
