Senior Revenue Accountant
About the role
As a Senior Revenue Accountant, you will be a critical contributor within the Revenue Accounting team, owning the end-to-end revenue recognition process for our Gusto Retirement segment while also lending support to new and emerging revenue products across the business.
You will be responsible for accurate and timely revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606, maintaining and reconciling subledger systems, and partnering cross-functionally with Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Product teams to ensure financial integrity as we scale.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end revenue recognition for the Gusto Retirement segment (401K SaaS, IRA, AUM fees, plan administration)
- Prepare monthly journal entries, subledger reconciliations, and supporting schedules for retirement revenue streams
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close within established timelines
- Apply ASC 606 guidance to complex arrangements including variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal vs. agent assessments
- Build and maintain automated solutions using AI tools, Python/SQL, or Excel scripting to eliminate manual work
- Identify and implement process improvements across the revenue close, reducing cycle time and increasing accuracy
- Parenthel cross-functionally with Retirement Operations, FP&A, Engineering, and Data teams on revenue data integrity and new product launches
Requirements
- Bachelor's in Accounting; CPA preferred (active or in progress)
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on revenue accounting
- Strong ASC 606 knowledge applied to SaaS, subscription, or fee-based models
- Proven track record building automation — scripts, tools, or workflows that reduced manual effort (you can speak to these concretely)
- Advanced Excel; Python or SQL a strong plus
- NetSuite or revenue subledger experience a plus
- Big 4 or public accounting background preferred; fintech or financial services a bonus
- Comfortable with ambiguity, curious about AI, and excited to build processes from scratch
Qualifications
- Experience with AI tools and automation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting
Skills
- Strong understanding of ASC 606 and related accounting standards
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Python/SQL
- Experience with NetSuite or similar revenue management systems
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Pay
The cash compensation amount for this role is $87,660/yr to $108,114/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $106,385/yr to $131,208/yr for San Francisco & New York.
Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Schedule
Employees who are based in Gusto's physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
