About the role
Manage a moderate-sized mouse colony comprising some 10 unique strains. A deep understanding of mouse breeding practices, PCR-based genotyping, and tissue isolations is required. Careful record keeping and database management of the mice is also an integral component. Help direct postdocs and students with their own mouse studies. Assist in cell culture and perform molecular biology assays (eg, Western blotting, qRT-PCR).
Responsibilities
- Maintain and update the mouse colony, including genotyping and inventory updates.
- Perform PCR, gel electrophoresis, and document gels with accurate labeling and upkeep in a notebook.
- Euthanize mice to keep the mouse census low, and perform timed matings for embryo collection when necessary. Administer tamoxifen for specific strains used in conditional gene deletion or reporter activation.
- Assist in cell culture, perform Western blotting, and assist with frozen sectioning and immunostaining of tissues.
- Support postdocs and students with genotyping, euthanasia, qRT-PCR, and tissue harvesting for downstream applications.
- Develop new PCR protocols and genotyping schematics for ease of use and training purposes.
- Order supplies and maintain lab equipment as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or other natural, life, health care, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience in research, basic science, or a clinical setting, particularly clinical trials research.
- Strong experience in mouse work, including mouse surgery, tissue isolation, and physiology measurement such as ultrasound and blood pressure measurement.
- Background in molecular biology is a plus.
Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willing to learn.
