About the role
A well-established and rapidly growing commercial construction company is seeking a Senior Project Accountant to join its finance team. This is an excellent opportunity to partner directly with Project Managers and leadership while taking ownership of the financial health of large-scale construction projects from inception through closeout.
Responsibilities
- Manage project setup, budgets, cost codes, contract values, change orders, and billing within construction accounting systems.
- Prepare and submit owner billings, including AIA payment applications, schedules of values, retainage, stored materials, and supporting documentation.
- Monitor project costs, commitments, subcontractor activity, and job profitability throughout the project lifecycle.
- Perform monthly project reconciliations, WIP reporting, revenue recognition support, and month-end close activities.
- Partner with Project Managers to review job costs, forecast project performance, analyze margins, and identify financial risks.
- Track subcontractor compliance, including lien waivers, insurance certificates, certified payroll, bonds, and required documentation.
- Support cash flow management through billing, collections, subcontractor payments, and retention tracking.
- Prepare financial reporting, variance analyses, and ad hoc reports for project teams and executive leadership.
- Assist with project closeout, internal and external audits, process improvements, and mentoring junior accounting staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of construction project accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP schedules, job costing, contract billing, and revenue recognition.
- Experience with construction ERP platforms such as Sage Intacct, Foundation, Procore, Vista, CMiC, or similar.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and financial analysis.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across Finance and Operations.
