Duties/Responsibilities
- Apply mechanical engineering skills to design, develop, analyze, and test all mechanical aspects of portable electronics equipment.
- Generate 3D CAD designs and 2D drawings utilizing Solidworks.
- Meet project objectives with innovation, creativity and good engineering practice.
- Design new, innovative products and drive enhancements/improvements to current products.
- Seek new and better technologies and methods to increase product performance, add features and reduce component and production costs.
- Create and maintain detailed drawings of designs and assemblies per document control standards.
- Effectively use AMS’s Product Development Process and industry standard product development methodologies and design tools.
- Specify and perform design validation testing.
- Provide marketing support, which includes providing technical evaluations and determining project development and product cost estimates for new product ideas.
- Provide support to Production, which includes making design changes to improve manufacturability as appropriate, reduce product build costs and component cost as well as support the selection and qualifying of vendors/suppliers.
- Participate in failure analysis/investigations to find the root-cause of production and field failures and, if appropriate, make design changes.
- Be familiar with domestic and international Regulatory Standards; UL, CE, ISO, IPC, ANSI Y14.5M, etc. Support testing to these standards and get certifications as appropriate.
- Utilize Rapid Prototyping techniques to create mock-ups of products to be used by Marketing and Sales to validate market requirements.
- Continuously improve skills required by seeking training through seminars, literature, industry shows/workshops and relevant course work.
- Perform other duties as required.
Experience And Skills
- Must be a current user of Solidworks CAD software.
- Familiarity with PDM CAD data management is a plus.
- Direct experience with injection molded plastic part design.
- GD&T is a plus.
- Direct experience with complex assembly design and electrical component integration.
- Strong experience with tolerance analysis of complex assemblies.
- Ability to complete entire projects with minimal supervision, complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, and learn new principles, ideas, and concepts.
- Hands-on failure analysis and process troubleshooting.
- Ability to determine root-cause failure modes and distinguish between process and design issues.
- Self-starter with the ability to work on multiple projects.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, at all organizational levels.
- A demonstrated interest in continuing education in relevant technology areas.
- Product design background including portable electronics devices and/or medical devices, consumer electronic devices.
- Fluency in mechanical engineering principles used in design, including thermodynamics, mechanics, materials science, and fluid mechanics.
- Design of Experiments, basic statistics, and experience with design verification and reliability testing.
- Minitab experience is a plus.
- Direct experience in designing parts using a variety of techniques and materials.
- Ability to work effectively in an indoor office environment, communicate and receive information with other team members effectively both verbally and using written reports and documents.
- The ability to work with a personal computer and with various small tools and shop equipment is expected.
Requirements
- Possess a minimum Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive project responsibilities, ownership, and scope.
- Experience using formal Product Development Processes (Stage-Gate).
