Senior Hardware Technical Program Manager
About the role
Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager to lead Hardware Server Platform development and delivery for Azure’s cloud technologies and services. You will build cross-team partnerships to transform new hardware concepts into scalable solutions for Microsoft’s Cloud ("Concept to Live"). This role is at the forefront of innovating hardware designs to propel Microsoft’s cloud growth, combining technical capabilities with business insight and strategy.
SCHIE powers Microsoft’s "Intelligent Cloud" mission, delivering core infrastructure for over 200 online businesses, including Office 365, Bing, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and Azure services (AI, compute, storage, and networking). The team ensures timely, high-quality, and high-volume deployment of new hardware infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Lead a virtual team of functional leads (hardware/software engineering, sourcing, supply chain, networking, and datacenter operations) to document a clear Plan-of-Record (POR) and meet project milestones.
- Drive technical program management for new Cloud hardware development, including planning and execution of cross-functional product development and launch strategies.
- Provide technical leadership, identify risks, and collaborate with internal/external partners to form cohesive development plans.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of product technical requirements, milestones, deliverables, and interdependencies to establish effective project infrastructure.
- Leverage engineering skills to solve problems, fill gaps, and achieve objectives through cross-functional collaboration.
- Communicate and escalate risks/dependencies, ensuring timely decision-making and accountability for team deliverables.
- Conduct risk management for new product introduction, including scenario planning and mitigation.
- Interact with senior management to highlight risks and provide recommendations for product-level decisions.
- Operate effectively in ambiguity, applying or designing processes where needed to drive clarity and alignment.
- Ensure cross-functional alignment for Data Center infrastructure development, launch, and deployment readiness.
- Use program management tools and communication methods to maintain stakeholder understanding of the program plan.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree and 4+ years of experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check (required every two years).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering or a related discipline.
- 7+ years of experience leading technical HW + SW projects from requirements through launch, including managing complex schedules and removing roadblocks.
- Supplier management experience with ODMs, SIs, and IHVs.
- 3+ years of experience providing executive-level communications and program updates.
- Ability to partner with cross-functional teams to define, prioritize, and implement features, infrastructure, processes, and workflows.
- Experience creating and operationalizing processes to improve organizational effectiveness and meet business goals.
- Coaching and enabling Program Managers within the team and partner organizations.
- Ability to monitor and measure engineering impact using key performance indicators.
- Strong technical design, problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience shipping high-quality products and services.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, assess opportunities, and drive issues to closure with a high bar for quality.
Pay
The typical base pay range for this role in the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. For specific work locations within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the range is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
