About the Role

Powell Service Technicians ensure the end-to-end safety, quality, and performance of Powell equipment across the US and Canada. This role involves installations, preventative maintenance, and corrective maintenance. Technicians service the west coast, gulf coast south, offshore, and east coast regions. Qualified technicians receive safety and technical training, full office support, a company vehicle, standard tooling, testing equipment, a laptop, phone compensation, and a company expense card.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to Powell’s current safety and quality standards.
• Complete all site documentation in a timely manner, including weekly time sheets, signed service and repair orders, materials used, and report writing.
• Provide regular and clear communication regarding work schedule to the Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager.
• Maintain flexible work hours, including overtime and periodic weekend support.
• Be available to travel up to 85% of the year.
• Comply with Powell’s standard operating procedures, documentation processes, safety processes, and protocols.
• Coordinate with Powell Project management, customers, vendors, and labor support in a professional and customer-centric manner.
• Work in various roles, from supporting in-house fabrication in the Manufacturing Department to overseeing small crews on installation projects.
• Perform installations of switchgear and PCR (Power Control Rooms).
• Conduct performance testing on Powell equipment and components, including insulation testing (megger testing), Ductor, Hi Potential testing, torque tests, and mechanical/functional testing.
• Perform regular inspections of any issued vehicle or calibrated equipment/tools.
• Provide support to the services manufacturing group, including construction, installation, wiring, and testing.
• Troubleshoot, test, and repair switchgear, PowlVac breakers, and related equipment.

Requirements

• 4 years of experience as a shop and/or field electrical/breaker technician.
• Basic knowledge of Electrical Industry manufacturing standards, including sections of ANSI IEEE C37 applicable to the design and manufacture of breakers and switchgear.
• Basic knowledge of ANSI IEEE device function numbers and ampacities of electrical conductors in switchgear applications.
• Basic knowledge of electrical air and surface creepage clearance requirements.
• Ability to write accurate and complete test reports, project summaries, and explain basic anomalies found on projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic familiarity with contactor and circuit breaker schematics.
• Basic understanding of hi potential testing and low resistance testing.
• Basic working knowledge of mechanical and electrical functional testing of circuit breakers and electrical switchgear.
• NICET Level 1 certification.
• HUET / Offshore Survival Training (provided if not currently certified).
• NFPA 70E training (preferred; training can be provided).
• OSHA 10 / 30 training (preferred; training can be provided).

Skills & Abilities

• Basic knowledge in the design and manufacture of bus and structural modification projects.
• Knowledge of basic electrical theory and control circuits, including Ohm's Law and basic AC/DC theory.
• Ability to assist senior-level technicians with maintenance, repair, installation, upgrades, and retrofits on Powell switchgear and power control rooms.

Working & Environmental Conditions

The Field Service Technician typically performs duties in an industrial environment, both locally and across the Continental US. The role requires adherence to safety policies and the use of special equipment to protect against hazards.

Physical Demands

• Medium physical effort, including lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
• Full range of mobility in upper and lower body, with the ability to work in various positions (stooping, standing, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting) for extended periods.
• Ability to work at heights greater than 10 feet and on ladders, scissors lifts, and bucket lifts.
