About the role
This is a full-time exempt (40+ hours/week), hybrid role located in Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; New York, NY; or Seattle, WA.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, review, and approval of High Voltage (HV) and Medium Voltage (MV) electrical systems, including substations, utility interconnections, transformers, feeders, and distribution infrastructure
- Evaluate utility interconnection opportunities and develop technical solutions that support facility growth and operational reliability
- Manage grid interconnection processes and coordinate technical submissions with utilities, ISO/RTO organizations, and regulatory agencies
- Review electrical designs, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and substation layouts to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards
- Provide technical guidance during power procurement and utility service negotiations, including evaluation of capacity, reliability, redundancy, power factor, and curtailment considerations
- Assess operational and technical risks associated with utility service agreements and recommend mitigation strategies
- Troubleshoot HV/MV distribution issues, perform root cause analyses, and develop corrective action plans
- Support construction, commissioning, startup, and turnover activities for substations and electrical infrastructure projects
- Develop upgrade strategies for existing facilities to improve capacity, resiliency, and efficiency
- Conduct engineering audits focused on HV/MV infrastructure performance and operational readiness
- Interface with utilities, EPC firms, consultants, equipment manufacturers, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution
- Manage multiple concurrent electrical infrastructure projects across various regions
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and applicable industry experience
- 7+ years of experience in HV/MV power systems, utility infrastructure, substations, or mission-critical electrical environments
- Strong understanding of utility interconnections, substations, and electrical distribution systems
- Experience managing engineering consultants, contractors, and complex infrastructure projects
- Ability to evaluate technical alternatives and make informed engineering recommendations in ambiguous environments
- Experience troubleshooting complex electrical power distribution systems
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with utilities, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders
- Ability and willingness to spend time in the field supporting active projects and operational facilities
- Experience designing, reviewing, or overseeing utility-scale substations ranging from 13.8 kV to 230 kV
- Knowledge of protective relaying, protection and control systems, SCADA integration, and substation automation
- Experience supporting utility service agreements, power procurement efforts, or power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiations
- Strong knowledge of IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, and regional utility standards
- Experience reviewing:
- Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
- Protection and control schematics
- Congstruction drawings
- Equipment submittals
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred

- Experience supporting mission-critical facilities with redundant electrical distribution architectures
- Familiarity with:
- Transformers
- UPS systems
- Diesel generators
- Static Transfer Switches (STS)
- MV/LV switchgear
- EPMS, SCADA, and BMS platforms
