Position Summary
The Senior Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting operations of a community association management company and ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial reporting for the communities managed by the organization.
Essential Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for a portfolio of community associations and/or the organization's association accounting department.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support to Controllers, Senior Property Accountants, Property Accountants, and other accounting personnel.
- Review and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of monthly financial statements, general ledgers, balance sheets, income statements, and supporting schedules.
- Establish and maintain accounting procedures, policies, and internal controls to promote accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
- Monitor accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash activity, reconciliations, and other key accounting functions.
- Review bank reconciliations, financial statements, journal entries, general ledger activity, and other accounting records.
- Assist with the preparation, review, and monitoring of annual association budgets.
- Partner with Community Association Managers to address financial questions, variances, budget issues, and unusual transactions.
- Analyze financial results and identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure association financial records are maintained in accordance with applicable accounting standards, company policies, governing documents, and applicable Florida statutes.
- Serve as a resource to Community Association Managers and other departments regarding accounting and financial matters.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor the accounting team while promoting accountability, collaboration, and professional development.
- Establish clear expectations and standards for accuracy, timeliness, and customer service.
- Review team performance and identify training and development needs.
- Aid management with staffing, hiring, and organizational planning within the accounting department.
- Serve as a resource to Community Association Managers and other departments regarding accounting and financial matters.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within community association management, property management, real estate, or a multi-entity environment.
- Previous supervisory or management experience required.
- Strong knowledge of general accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Experience managing or reviewing accounting for multiple entities, properties, or associations.
- Knowledge of community association accounting and Florida HOA/COA requirements strongly preferred.
- Experience with annual budgets, financial statements, reconciliations, audits, and financial analysis.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Experience with community association management/accounting platforms such as Vantaca, CINC, TOPS, or similar systems is preferred.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Able to work collaboratively with executives, Community Association Managers, accounting personnel, Board members, and other stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
- Community association management accounting experience.
- Experience overseeing accounting for a large number of associations.
- Experience supervising Controllers, property accountants, or accounting teams.
- Knowledge of Florida Statutes Chapters 718 and 720.
- Experience working with association audits and CPA firms.
- Experience implementing or improving accounting processes and internal controls.
- Experience with Vantaca or other HOA-specific accounting platforms.
