Senior Content Strategist, (Senior Consultant, Experience & Design)
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Content Strategist as part of our Senior Consultant, Experience and Design career path to reimagine a large, complex content ecosystem and shape an intuitive, user-centered Drupal experience for a public-sector client. This role combines content strategy, information architecture, UX research, and UX writing in a fast-moving Agile engagement supporting the migration of a legacy enterprise site to a modern, accessible platform. You'll translate highly technical information into clear, plain-language content, design the sitemap and taxonomy that make it easy to find, validate decisions through focused evaluative research, and put governance in place so the client can maintain the result independently. This role is fully remote.
At Fearless, the Senior Consultant combines expertise in Content Design, Content Strategy, Product Design, Service Design, User Research, and UX leadership. This role will possess the necessary skills at an advanced level of proficiency for setting the vision, strategy, and systems that guide cross-functional design teams in creating scalable, impactful, and user-centered solutions. The role requires a balance of strategic foresight, design mentorship, and hands-on expertise to deliver high-quality products and services that meet user, customer, and organizational needs.
Responsibilities
- Reimagine a large, complex content ecosystem, translating highly technical information into accessible, plain-language web content organized around user needs and top tasks.
- Architect an intuitive, user-centric Drupal experience, optimizing site structure, content types, and taxonomies for a modern Drupal environment.
- Lead content audit and assessment work with client subject matter experts, determining what content to retain, consolidate, or retire, and ensuring every page and document is assigned a disposition.
- Develop the baseline information architecture, navigation hierarchy, and labeling, then design and document a comprehensive sitemap and taxonomy that makes all content findable.
- Map existing URLs to their new locations to preserve search visibility and user access, and document the sitemap as the source for migration.
- Plan and conduct targeted evaluative research, such as card sorting, tree testing, heuristic reviews, and usability testing, to validate assumptions and confirm information architecture decisions.
- Develop page mock-ups as needed, using established design system page types and components to create repeatable content patterns.
- Lead UX writing and content design, applying plain language guidelines and accessibility best practices to simplify and clarify high-priority content.
- Facilitate stakeholder workshops and manage stakeholder relationships, gathering input, resolving competing priorities, and securing alignment on structure and content decisions.
- Create governance documentation covering decisions, workflows, and content ownership, including summaries of user research and content strategy to support long-term maintenance.
- Provide guidance and knowledge transfer to client content managers and editors, including office hours or similar consultative support, so they can manage the site without ongoing contractor dependency.
- Collaborate with the project manager, designers, and engineers to keep content, structure, and implementation aligned throughout delivery.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in content strategy, information architecture, UX research, and content governance.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field, or three additional years of equivalent related experience.
- Proven experience working within a Drupal environment, with an understanding of how Drupal handles content types, taxonomies, and modular design.
- Demonstrated experience migrating complex, legacy enterprise sites such as SharePoint to modern CMS platforms.
- Proficiency in designing sitemaps, taxonomies, and navigation structures for large, complex websites.
- Deep knowledge of content audit methodologies and experience consolidating or retiring redundant, outdated, or trivial content in large content inventories.
- Hands-on background in planning and conducting evaluative UX research, including card sorting, tree testing, and usability testing, and translating findings into design decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to apply UX writing and plain language principles to simplify complex, technical, or regulatory content, with accessibility in mind.
- Proven track record facilitating workshops and managing stakeholders and subject matter experts through feedback and decision-making cycles.
- Experience creating content governance documentation, workflows, and ownership models for sustained client independence.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Availability during core business hours for status updates, risk mitigation meetings, and ad-hoc consultations.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. and ability to clear a background check before starting.
Preferred qualifications
- Hands-on experience with UX research platforms such as Optimal Workshop or UserTesting for tree testing and card sorting.
- Background in creating page mock-ups or wireframes from an established design system or component library.
- Knowledge of content governance for large public-sector or enterprise websites.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1 AA and plain language requirements for government content.
