Senior Consultant, Traffic Engineering

WSP is seeking a Senior Consultant, Traffic Engineer for our Valhalla, New York office to work on projects with our Traffic Engineering Team.

About the role

Provides technical assistance and guidance on planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation and their terminals. Tasks may include performing capacity analyses, concept development and design, analyzing traffic patterns and modeling, traffic signal design and timing studies, pavement marking design, and sign plans.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
• Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near-term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, requiring coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
• Prepare Signing and Pavement Marking design plans and Traffic Signal and Electrical design plans.
• Prepare Traffic Control/Staging (i.e., Maintenance and Protection of Traffic) design plans.
• Perform Crash Analysis, signal timing analysis, and Safety Studies.
• Oversee traffic data collection, trip generation, and traffic analysis activities on various projects.
• Prepare technical writing documents, visualizations such as tables and charts, and presentations.
• Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
• Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
• Verify site characteristics, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed safely and efficiently.
• Work closely with developers and builders to determine the impact of new structures, developments, or construction projects on the road system and make recommendations to mitigate or offset the impact.
• Initiate, direct, and apply the results of studies and program reviews to evaluate existing and projected transportation systems, traffic impacts of proposed developments, and recommend traffic safety enhancement projects.
• Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
• Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
• Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
• Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
• Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
• Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
• EIT certification.
• Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with NYSDOT and regional agencies including NYCDOT, NYSDOT, PANYNJ.
• Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
• ITS Design experience is a plus.
• Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
• Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
• Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, OpenRoads, MicroStation, or similar software, traffic simulation and modeling platforms including Synchro, HCS, Aimsun, Vissim, Visum.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Engineering.
• NY PE License.

Pay

Expected compensation range: $89,000 - $125,000, based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity.
