Senior Consultant, Traffic Engineering

WSP is seeking a Senior Consultant, Traffic Engineer for our Valhalla, New York office to work on a variety of traffic engineering projects.

About the role

Be involved in projects with our Traffic Engineering Team and contribute to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves transportation challenges. This role involves providing technical assistance and guidance on planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets, highways, networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other transportation modes and terminals.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional traffic engineering work, including investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
• Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near-term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects, coordinating with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
• Prepare Signing and Pavement Marking design plans, Traffic Signal and Electrical design plans, and Traffic Control/Staging (Maintenance and Protection of Traffic) design plans.
• Perform Crash Analysis, signal timing analysis, and Safety Studies.
• Oversee traffic data collection, trip generation, and traffic analysis activities on various projects.
• Prepare technical writing documents, visualizations (tables, charts), and presentations.
• Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems.
• Work individually or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals on multiple concurrent projects.
• Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigations, traffic plan reviews, signal system design, and operations analysis.
• Work closely with developers and builders to assess the impact of new structures or projects on the road system and recommend mitigation strategies.
• Initiate, direct, and apply results of studies to evaluate transportation systems, traffic impacts of proposed developments, and recommend traffic safety enhancement projects.
• Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, and illustrations for interpreting and presenting findings.
• Maintain quality control standards for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
• Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
• Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations for design and construction issues or opportunities.
• Stay current with the latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
• Collaborate with engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on federally, state, regionally, and locally funded road and transportation projects.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering with prior traffic design experience.
• EIT certification.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with NYSDOT and regional agencies, including NYCDOT and PANYNJ.
• Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, processes, and design related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and communications systems.
• ITS Design experience is a plus.
• Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Project management experience with small to mid-level projects, including tracking hours and expenses.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Strong self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members with strict adherence to QA/QC.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, OpenRoads, MicroStation, or similar software, and traffic simulation and modeling platforms (Synchro, HCS, Aimsun, Vissim, Visum).
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Engineering.
• New York Professional Engineer (PE) License.

Pay

Expected compensation range: $89,000 - $125,000, based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location.
