Senior Accounting Cleanup Specialist

About the role
STAXX is a fully remote fractional CFO firm (founded 2022, team of 30+, 90+ active clients from $1MM–$30MM revenue) delivering top-tier accounting, reporting, and CFO advisory across home services, construction, healthcare, SaaS, and more. The Role involves owning the first and most critical chapter of every engagement: bringing a new client's books into a clean, framework-ready state so the ongoing team can deliver timely financials.
Responsibilities
- Lead onboarding: review client systems, set materiality thresholds, and finalize the accounting framework and client-specific accruals with the CFO.
- Own all cleanup tasks: verify account balances across the full cleanup period within materiality, with documented support for balances and treatment decisions.
- Handle client accounting and documentation communication, sending regular progress updates and escalating satisfaction concerns to the CFO.
- Prepare the handoff: compile and record client-specific knowledge, set up QBO rules, amortization schedules, and recurring entries for ongoing accounting.
- Delegate to and review assigned Staff work, keep in-house project tracking systems up to date and accurate, and coordinate quality review and handoff with the Cleanup Services Manager.
What We're Looking For
- 4+ years of accounting experience with a strong audit, cleanup, catch-up, or full-cycle background; CPA and/or audit experience a plus.
- A forensic mindset paired with genuine curiosity. Inherit books that are a mess and enjoy fixing them. Trace discrepancies to their root cause, reconcile to the penny, and aren't satisfied by numbers that merely tie out. Want to understand why they tie out.
- Sound framework judgment (GAAP, modified GAAP, modified cash basis) and know when a client's situation calls for pragmatism over textbook purity.
- Advanced proficiency in QBO and Excel/Google Sheets, comfortable with bank-feed rules, CSV imports, and the occasional migration from spreadsheets or a prior system.
- Leave behind clean workpapers and documentation so thorough the next accountant never has to guess what you did or why.
- A clear, confident communicator who can lead onboarding and handoff conversations. Explain a tangled fix to a client in plain English, set expectations honestly, and tell a teammate exactly what they're inheriting.
- Self-directed and dependable in a remote setting. Manage several cleanups at different stages without dropping threads, flag risks early instead of at the deadline, and take full ownership of an engagement from first login to final handoff.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: Expected annual salary compensation for this role is between $90,000 and $100,000, depending on experience and applicable skills.
- Paid Time Off: STAXX has an open PTO policy. We strive to be as flexible as possible. When your work is high quality and done on time, and communication with teams and clients is strong, we are very happy to be flexible with time off.
- 100% Remote: As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can work from anywhere. We've been fully remote since day one and have built our culture around it.
- Career Growth: A lean, high-growth environment means real opportunities to take on new projects, expand your skill set, and advance within the firm.
