Senior Accountant, Payroll Tax

Responsibilities

• Mentor and lead Sr. Payroll Tax Specialists and Payroll Tax Specialists
• Ensure accurate and timely payroll tax filings and remittances
• Oversee reconciliation of payroll tax returns and general ledger accounts
• Manage responses to tax notices and coordinate with third-party tax administration providers
• Lead year-end processes including W-2 preparation and balancing
• Monitor changes in tax laws and ensure compliance across jurisdictions
• Support escheatment processes and amended return filings
• Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to resolve payroll tax issues
• Develop and implement process improvements and automation strategies
• Provide timely responses to all customers and users of payroll tax information
• Provide specific requests to both inside and outside auditors
• Ensure compliance with all SOX controls
• Partner with payroll systems support to ensure that systems and reports are efficient, accurate, and in compliance with Company controls
• Participate cross-functionally to support SOPs and projects
• Aid in internal/external audit requests
• Lead special projects as identified by payroll management team
• Provide WOW! Customer Service to AutoZoners and internal stakeholders
• Oversee the payroll tax processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting of the Company's payroll tax expenses and liabilities
• Manage the reconciliation of all payroll tax general ledger accounts
• Provide reconciling differences and clearing entries on a timely basis

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree (BA, BS) or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Financial Systems
• Master's degree preferred
• Three to five years’ experience in payroll tax, accounting, and analysis
• Advanced Excel skills and intermediate level for other Microsoft Office applications
• Strong human relations, analytical, problem-solving, multi-tasking, and communication skills
• Excellent coordination and organizational skills
• Ability to drive results
