About the role
STAXX is a fully remote fractional CFO firm (founded 2022, team of 30+, 90+ active clients from $1MM–$30MM revenue) delivering top-tier accounting, reporting, and CFO advisory across home services, construction, healthcare, SaaS, and more. The Role involves owning month-end close, serving as the accounting point of contact, and acting as the quality checkpoint between Staff work and CFO review.
Responsibilities
- Own the close for each engagement: follow the close checklist, research variances, and deliver a complete, no-open-items close ready for fractional CFO review.
- Review all Staff work (categorizations, reconciliations, entries) and the financials for accuracy and reasonableness before anything reaches the fractional CFO.
- Delegate and direct Staff work, monitor progress and coach and develop the team, surfacing recurring skill gaps to the Ongoing Accounting Services Manager.
- Communicate with clients regularly via email and Zoom to field accounting questions and fulfill documentation requests.
- Apply the client's framework (GAAP, modified GAAP, or modified cash basis) consistently.
- Aid in implementing updated firm quality standards and new firm processes.
- Keep in-house project tracking systems accurate.
Requirements
- 2+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of month-end close; a bachelor’s in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Licensed CPA is a bonus; Public accounting audit experience is a bonus.
- A sharp reviewer with a builder's instinct. You spot the out-of-pattern entry before it becomes a problem, and you're always looking for the process fix that keeps it from happening again.
- Sound technical judgment across reporting frameworks (GAAP, modified GAAP, modified cash basis), with the pragmatism to know when a client's situation calls for judgment over textbook purity.
- A genuine developer of people. You explain the why, not just the what, and you take real satisfaction in watching a Staff Accountant get faster and sharper because of your feedback.
- An excellent communicator in both directions. You translate accounting into plain English for clients, set honest expectations, and give leadership clear, timely updates with no surprises.
- Self-directed and dependable in a remote setting.
Qualifications
- Experience with GAAP, modified GAAP, or modified cash basis.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Skills
- Accounting software proficiency (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Benefits
- Paid Time Off: STAXX has an open PTO policy. We strive to be as flexible as possible. When your work is high quality and done on time, and communication with teams and clients is strong, we are very happy to be flexible with time off.
- 100% Remote: As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can work from anywhere. We've been fully remote since day one and have built our culture around it.
- Career Growth: A lean, high-growth environment means real opportunities to take on new projects, expand your skill set, and advance within the firm.
Pay
Expected annual compensation for this role is between $80,000 and $90,000, depending on experience and applicable skills.
Schedule
As a fully remote position, hours are flexible but must align with client needs.
