About the role
New York Cares is a leading nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers across New York City for education, hunger, and public space initiatives. This role supports the organization's financial operations and long-term sustainability by managing key accounting functions.
Responsibilities
- Reconcile deposits from banks, Stripe, and other payment platforms against Salesforce and internal records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and transparency.
- Perform monthly cash receipts reconciliations and maintain accurate recording of financial transactions across all accounts.
- Monitor and track invoices and spending related to Day of Service (DOS) activities, ensuring expenses align with approved project budgets and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and record journal entries, payments, and receipts in QuickBooks Online and MIP, ensuring consistency and alignment between systems.
- Partner with Program and Development teams to support accurate tracking, reporting, and reconciliation of restricted and project-based funds.
- Review, track, and reconcile American Express (AMEX) expenditures, including follow-up on outstanding items and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Support the Accounts Payable cycle, including invoice review, coding, approval workflows, and timely payment processing through Bill.com in accordance with organizational policies and internal controls.
- Aid in month-end close activities, financial reporting, and audit preparation as needed.
- Contribute to ongoing process improvements and support the development and documentation of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or nonprofit accounting certification a plus.
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, preferably with a non-profit.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, and reconciliation tools).
- Familiarity with MIP, Quickbooks, Salesforce, Stripe, and donor management systems is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of non-profit accounting principles.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.

- Experience with accounting systems such as MIP, QuickBooks Online, or Sage, along with Salesforce, Excel, and related integrations.

Benefits
- Salary range: $80,000 to $90,000.
- Hybrid schedule: In office Mon/Tue/Thu; remote Wed/Fri.
