Self Direction Direct Support Professional
Position Overview
Working on behalf of a family, provide education, instruction, direct services, and supports to empower and enable individuals to achieve their stated goals and to live as optimally as possible. Facilitate community inclusion, integration and relationship building.
Role And Responsibilities
- Meet the emotional, social, physical, and cognitive needs of each individual
- Ensure a person-centered approach is used in all aspects of service delivery
- Ensure goals reflected in an individual’s plan are addressed and worked on with the individual
- Assist individuals in performing activities of daily living with as much independence as possible
- Aid in the development of social skills by providing education, training, and role modeling
- Act as an advocate for consumers
- Encourage self-advocacy and choices
- Prepare and maintain records of individual’s progress and services performed, reporting changes in an individual’s condition to supervisor
- Ensure safety and well-being of consumers at all times
- Ensure open communication with caregivers and management regarding any problems or issues that arise
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: High School Diploma and 5 years working with the developmentally disabled preferred. A combination of education and experience that meets or exceeds the standards of the program.
- Required Qualifications And Knowledge: Must possess a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Good verbal, written, interpersonal, organizational, and active listening skills. Good organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask. Good collaboration skills. Problem-solving skills.
Physical Demands
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds force constantly to move objects.
- Regularly required to reach with hands and arms.
- Regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch and bend.
- Fingering is required regularly for typing and the use of hands in a repetitive motion.
- Regularly required to talk and hear with the ability to exchange and receive detailed information.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data, viewing computer screens.
