About the role
A growing custom home builder in the Greater Richmond area is seeking an organized, creative, and client-focused Design Consultant.
Responsibilities
- Guide clients through meetings to select finishes, fixtures, colors, materials, and custom options.
- Maintain weekly communication with clients throughout the selection process.
- Manage selection deadlines and explain the scheduling and cost implications of delayed decisions.
- Keep selection sheets, specifications, pricing, and option documents accurate and current.
- Prepare change orders, obtain required signatures, and collect applicable client payments.
- Collaborate with estimating to obtain pricing for custom selections and items outside the standard options catalog.
- Serve as a liaison between sales, estimating, production, and field teams to ensure all parties have the necessary information.
- Cover selections for speculative homes and assist with model-home design decisions.
- Coordinate client meetings with suppliers, subcontractors, and trade partners when appropriate.
- Maintain an organized Design Center with current samples, displays, literature, and product information.
- Review relevant homeowner documents and design-related responsibilities with clients.
- Identify and resolve selection issues before they cause delays, errors, or rework.
- Create engaging social media content featuring design trends, project inspiration, and the custom-home design process.
Qualifications
- A positive, solutions-focused, "can-do" attitude.
- Experience in residential design, interior selections, custom homebuilding, construction, or a related client-facing role.
- Understanding of residential construction processes, materials, finishes, and design coordination.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines, and detailed documents.
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and customer-service skills.
- The ability to discuss upgrades, pricing, schedules, and design decisions confidently with homeowners.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through unexpected challenges.
- The ability to collaborate effectively with sales, estimating, production, suppliers, and trade partners.
- Strong computer skills and willingness to learn project and selection-management systems.
- Social media or content-creation experience is an asset.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends based on client and project needs.
Pay
$75,000 - $95,000 depending on experience.
