Security Officer Armed - Recruit
About the role
The Security Officer Armed Recruit role is a transitional position for newly hired Security Officers while they prepare to become fully Armed Officers. During the 120‑day transition period all required training and certifications will be completed to allow progression to an Armed Security Officer role. The primary function of this role is to further develop the necessary skills, training, and certifications required to carry a weapon and function as a fully Armed Security Officer.
Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, VA is a 224‑bed technologically advanced acute care facility, Certified Primary Stroke Center, and home to specialized services in heart and vascular, urologic care, advanced diagnostics and surgery, a hospitalist program, one of the state’s busiest emergency departments, and the area’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital.
Responsibilities
- Develop the necessary skills for armed security duties
- Complete all required training and certifications
- Carry a weapon and function as a fully Armed Security Officer
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
- State DMV Motor Vehicle Record and current valid driver’s license (required)
- 1 year of security, military, or police experience (strongly preferred)
- Pass pre‑employment screening, including a fitness assessment and psychological evaluation
- Complete job‑specific certifications within 120 days of hire (failure results in termination)
- Undergo an annual fitness assessment
- Complete a psychological evaluation every 3 years as a condition of continued employment

Pay
The base pay range for full‑time employment is $19.86 – $29.15 hourly. Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on‑call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra‑shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs.
Schedule
Rotating schedule. Monday–Friday shifts: 7 am–3:30 pm, 3 pm–11:30 pm, 11 pm–7:30 am. Weekends may include a 12‑hour and a 4‑hour shift. New hires are asked to be flexible to start and move to a regular schedule. Schedules are set to match the two‑week pay period, with most officers working part of their 40 hours on alternate weekends.
