About the role
Under general supervision, perform tasks related to the operation of communication equipment used in receiving, sending, and relaying information in response to Emergency/Non-Emergency calls according to the goals of Mercy Health System, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy Standard of Care, and the Employee Code of Conduct.
- Determine exact location of each incident or request.
- Dispatch and track location of Public Safety Officers.
- Provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions when applicable.
- Maintain necessary documentation and records.
- Coordinate with various law enforcement agencies, the fire department, the House Nursing Supervisor, EMS, operators, alarm companies, administration, maintenance, EVS, guest services, and the Public Safety officer in charge.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Handle highly stressful situations with strong multitasking and communication skills.
- Prioritize information using a logical and rational approach to problem-solving.
- Exhibit self-discipline and confidence to control actions in emergency situations.
- Process information quickly and make decisions impacting safety.
- Proficiency in call-creation for emergency and non-emergency incidents, including:
- Making quick and accurate decisions based on prior guidance.
- Entering data (e.g., names, telephone numbers, license plates) into a computer.
- Hearing, comprehending, summarizing, and responding to verbal information.
- Using written information from lists (e.g., telephone books).
- Recognizing similarities or differences in information like addresses or names.
- Quickly learning and recognizing written descriptions (e.g., red car, blue boat).
- Remembering short-term information like telephone or license plate numbers.
- Evaluating and prioritizing or categorizing incidents.
- Identifying the most correct solution based on information.
- Determining routes/locations using basic maps.
- Correctly spelling commonly-used words to avoid delays in assistance.
- Communicating clearly using sentences or phrases.
- Reading and comprehending written passages.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) certification by NAED within 90 days of hire.
- Emergency Telecommunicator course (ETC) or successful completion during initial orientation.
Working Conditions
- Patience, emotional stability, and ability to work in high-stress situations.
- Works indoors with adequate temperature, ventilation, and lighting.
- Exposure to average indoor noise, disruptions, and normal indoor dust/dirt.
- Above-average stress levels.
- Periodically works beyond normal hours on an as-needed basis.
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods, with intermittent walking, bending, twisting, and reaching.
- Dexterity for simple coordinated movements of fingers, hands, feet, legs, and torso.
- Sedentary work with occasional lifting/carrying of objects.
