Security Assistant (Office Automation)

About the role

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), in Manhattan, KS.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a first point-of-contact for the Visitor Center, providing information, directing calls and visitors to the appropriate personnel/location, and using tact, courtesy, alertness, and good judgment.
  • Greet and process NBAF visitors and/or new employees using the proper procedures and system.
  • Cook up with the Visitor Center Administrator, sponsor, and guard force to process visit requests and ensure only pre-approved and authorized personnel are permitted onsite.
  • Work closely with the Visitor Center Administrator with the badging system for NBAF employees and visitors.
  • Maintain the automated database that includes information concerning the accountability, control and destruction of badges.
  • Visitor Center administrative tasks, including filing and maintaining accurate visitor and access-control records.

Requirements

  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
  • For the GS-06 level: Specialized experience is experience helping greet and process visitors or new employees by checking IDs and following basic access steps. Using a credential or data system to enter or look up simple screening or badge information. Assisting with handing out, tracking, and collecting badges following established procedures. Keeping security files and records organized and properly stored. Using Microsoft Office programs to complete basic tasks and communicate.
  • For the GS-07 level: Specialized experience is experience independently checking IDs, confirming approvals, and issuing correct badges for visitors and employees. Updating and maintaining the credentialing database, including running reports and tracking badge status. Serving as the main point of contact in the visitor center and coordinating with security guards as needed. Keeping required security records, updating documentation, and preparing incident details when necessary. Using Microsoft Office to manage data, communicate, and complete daily tasks. Identifying and resolving routine access or badge issues.
