The Huntington, founded in 1919, is a collections-based research and educational institution open to the public, housing world-class library, art, and botanical collections. About the Role

In this part-time role (28 hours per week), you will observe and report safety and security hazards, detect damage to property and collections, and engage with visitors from diverse backgrounds in a welcoming and inclusive manner. This position operates under the supervision of a Security Supervisor and/or Assistant Manager, Security Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively engage, greet, and orient visitors while protecting collections on view.
  • Adhere to institutional rules and policies, including those in The Huntington Staff Handbook.
  • Run check-in for special events and public programs, managing lines and communicating updates.
  • Maintain posts in gardens and galleries during public hours and events.
  • Assist with fire/life safety protocols, including medical incidents or emergency situations.
  • Participate in daily briefings, scheduled training, and curatorial walkthroughs of new exhibitions.
  • Set up and strike wayfinding devices, ticketing signage, and visitor engagement collateral.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of institutional information through staff communications and meetings.
  • Assist patrons with accessibility aids, including service animal accommodations per ADA guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and via radio.
  • Flexible schedule, including overtime, evenings, and weekends.
  • Friendly and outgoing disposition with strong communication skills for diverse visitors.
  • Experience in customer service or hospitality; hospitality-oriented individuals preferred.
  • Familiarity with The Huntington and interest in cultural property collections.
  • Ability to handle fast-paced events and remain attentive during quieter times.
  • Good judgment and willingness to act as a “first responder” in emergencies (e.g., earthquakes, medical incidents).

Working Conditions

  • Requires standing for long periods (average 8 hours per shift) and wearing a radio earpiece.
  • Must have visual acuity and ability to quickly identify and address safety/security concerns.
  • Regular moderate physical mobility, including walking, climbing stairs, and standing for hours.
  • May work outdoors in occasional inclement weather.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, reach, and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May work in hazardous conditions associated with emergencies (e.g., inclement weather).

Pay

$19.25/hour (increases to $19.50/hour after successful completion of introductory period).
