About the Role
This PRN/OCC position accepts assignment to any work station where patients are received and registered. The role involves variable hours and shifts within Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, a trusted regional hospital serving East Tennessee with advanced care and a personal touch.
Responsibilities
- Greet and assist patients, identify self, and briefly explain the registration process.
- Accurately schedule and enter orders and/or charges through the computer system.
- Photocopy necessary forms, returning originals to the customer.
- Follow department “downtime” procedures.
- Possess a working knowledge of hospital department services and their locations.
- Collect payments and/or deposits, balance cash collected, and correctly complete receipts.
- Obtain written orders from physicians; maintain a good working relationship with physicians, their staffs, and all hospital departments.
- Obtain and verify pre-certification, patient eligibility, and/or referrals when required by the payor.
- Obtain complete and accurate demographic and financial information from patients; secure necessary signatures for release of information and assignment of benefits.
- Complete the pre-registration process and accept reservations.
- Effect assignment or transfer of patients to appropriate beds within the hospital and prepare patient identification armbands.
- File department documents in a timely and accurate manner.
- Demonstrate understanding of payor regulations, including but not limited to Medicare; 72-hour rule; and secondary payor rules.
- Compile statistical reports, including census, ER log, room reservations, and requests for patient rooms.
- Courteously answer telephone calls, rotate calls, take messages, or complete the caller’s request.
- Perform other duties as assigned (non-essential functions).
Requirements
- A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
- Course work or on-the-job experience in typing, filing, and general office procedures is required.
- Ability to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
- Proficiency in the use of proper grammar.
- Additional training or on-the-job experience with medical terminology is preferred.
- Word processing skills are required; must be able to type a minimum of forty-five net words per minute.
- Previous secretarial experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
