About the role
The Second Cook position at Amherst College supports the college’s dining services in providing high-quality meals and ensuring operational efficiency. The position requires strong culinary skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Supports the culinary team with the planning, production, and implementation of menus and systems
- Provides operational supervision over daily culinary operations
- Ensures the quantity and quality of production align with standards
- Assists with menu development and new product research and development
- Supports operations during downtimes and in times of need
- Maintains cleanliness and security of production areas
- Ensures adherence to health department regulations and food safety standards
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 3-5 years of food preparation experience, including hot and cold food production
- Strong verbal and written communication, customer service, organizational, and time management skills
- Ability to taste and work with various ingredients
- Mathematical proficiency in reducing and expanding measurements
- Attention to detail and flexibility to work flexible hours
- Experience supporting initiatives fostering an inclusive and respectful environment
Qualifications
- Preferred: 5+ years high-volume food production
- Preferred: Supervisory experience

Pay
The expected salary range for this job opportunity is: $22.10 to $23.75/hour. The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations.
Schedule
The position may assist with board plan coverage in student dining and/or assist with campus-wide events. The work schedule changes often and corresponds to the College's operational needs. A flexible schedule with extended shift times is required.
