About the role

Parks Worker I and II positions are available in the Parks Department. The Parks Worker I position is entry-level, while the Parks Worker II is journey-level. The tentative start date is early March, with a seasonal schedule from March through October.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various equipment including tractors, trenchers, sod cutters, roto-tillers, skid steers, trucks, trailers, utility vehicles, small backhoes, loaders, aerators, wood chippers, flail and rotary mowers, a variety of riding mowers, walk-behind mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers and sprayers, edgers, bunker rakes, chain saws, pruning equipment, and various hand tools.
  • Mow, weed, trim, and remove grass clippings.
  • Water, aerate, renovate, and fertilize turf areas.
  • Plant, water, edge, prune, and remove trees, shrubs, bushes, and flowers.
  • Clear snow and leaves from parks, rights-of-way, sidewalks, and sports fields and courts.
  • Pick up trash and police areas.
  • Empty trash receptacles.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair parks and mowing equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor and adjust equipment components like belts, pulleys, filters, tire pressure, and fluid levels.
  • Clean and fuel equipment.
  • Set up traffic control devices.
  • Assist with the annual flower program, including design, purchasing, bed preparation, flower planting, maintenance, and removal of annual flowerbeds.
  • Assist with golf course maintenance, including mowing greens, tees, approaches, fairways, roughs, surrounds, and native areas; repairing ball marks; and removing trash and debris from ponds.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Xeric garden, including irrigation repair, planting shrubs and perennials, mowing turf plots, edging turf plots, monitoring plant material for moisture, identifying and labeling plant material, maintaining signs, and other Xeric maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with festival set up and tear down activities.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays, or flexible schedules as required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Two seasons or one year of experience for Parks Worker II.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
  • Knowledge of the operation of landscape equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of golf course rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of plant material and irrigation systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the functions of the position.
  • Ability to resolve problems and work in a variety of adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, or flexible schedules.

Qualifications

  • Parks Worker I: No education or experience required. One season of experience working in a grounds maintenance capacity, nursery, greenhouse, or other landscape-related organization preferred.
  • Parks Worker II: Two seasons or one year of experience. Mowing operations experience with basic and more complex commercial mowing equipment such as walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, rakes, and hand tools, zero turn radius riding mowers, 6 foot to 16 foot hydrostatic riding mowers, 60 hp tractors, etc.
