Seasonal Laborer - Year-Round

About the role

The City of Sterling Heights is seeking a Full-Time Year-Round Seasonal Laborer. This non-unionized position is a 40‑hour‑per‑week role within the Department of Public Works, performing general labor tasks across the Streets, Water, Sewer, Refuse, and Fleet Maintenance divisions.

Responsibilities

• Operate City‑owned vehicles (pick‑up trucks, small wheeled equipment) to and from job sites.
• Operate power tools and landscape maintenance equipment (mowers, trimmers, hand tools, etc.) as required.
• Inspect and repair equipment per departmental procedures; make repairs to City streets, right‑of‑ways, sidewalks, and greenspaces as needed.
• Perform turf maintenance, planting, and pruning of trees, flowers, and hedges.
• Maintain publicly owned properties, clean DPW garage, recycle centers, and facilities; conduct litter control and empty trash cans.
• Maintain sanitary and storm sewers and perform routine maintenance procedures.
• Sweep and clean up debris and materials from roads and right‑of‑ways.
• Perform snow and ice removal, including manual shoveling as required.
• Communicate effectively and follow direction from senior staff to complete non‑skilled manual labor tasks.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
• Minimum age 18 with a valid Michigan Driver's License and a good driving record.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Good physical condition capable of performing physical labor.
• Assignments are in six‑month increments, with possible extension upon supervisor written approval.

Pay

Starting wage is $17.50 per hour, with increases every six months.

Schedule

40‑hour‑per‑week, year‑round position.
