About the role

Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. This hourly, on-call position will support the archaeological fieldwork needs of the Midwest region.

This position requires the ability to work outdoors in urban and remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Extensive travel may be required. The standard work week is typically Monday through Friday, with overtime and weekend work required based on project demands and weather conditions. Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities to travel for fieldwork during the winter months. Multi-week field assignments are common.

Location: Stantec has offices across the Midwest. This position would be based at one of our offices in the Midwest, with projects including a mix of local and out-of-town fieldwork. Responsibilities

• Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
• Demonstrate skills and experience with field tasks such as precontact and historic artifact identification, as well as soil analysis and interpretation.
• Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Minnesota and neighboring states.
• Perform occasional laboratory duties on a project-specific basis, including artifact processing, classification, curation, artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
• Travel extensively to project sites, including multi-week field assignments.
• Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices, including following established safety protocols for hazardous conditions such as extreme weather, wildlife encounters, and excavation safety.
• Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and follow site-specific safety plans.
• Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.
• Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools.
• Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery.
• Maintain the ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and office locations as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a related field.
• Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role.
• Ability to walk 4-10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Positive, safety-first attitude with effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Organized and capable of executing work assignments with attention to detail.
• Commitment to producing high-quality in-field work products.

Qualifications

• Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous.
• Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.
• Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred.

Pay

Pay Range: $45,500.00 - $63,700.00 Annually (Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, NY Areas). In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Actual compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec, certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided.
