Seasonal Archaeology Field Technician

About the Role

Stantec is seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. This hourly, on-call position supports archaeological fieldwork needs in the Midwest region, working on a variety of projects including solar fields, residential developments, wetland restorations, urban revitalization, pipelines, transmission lines, transportation projects, and cemetery excavations. The role requires extensive outdoor work in urban and remote locations, often in rugged terrain and under all weather conditions. Multi-week field assignments and travel are common, with projects typically running from March through November.

Responsibilities

• Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork, including Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery.
• Demonstrate skills in precontact and historic artifact identification, soil analysis, and interpretation.
• Operate and maintain field equipment such as GPS units, digital cameras, tablets, and hand tools.
• Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, curation, photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
• Travel extensively to project sites, including overnight stays with provided single occupancy hotel rooms, paid travel time, and per diem.
• Prioritize safety by following established protocols for hazardous conditions, participating in daily tailgate safety meetings, and exercising stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.
• Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Minnesota and neighboring states.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a related field.
• Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role.
• Ability to walk 4-10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions for extended periods.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to and from project sites and office locations.
• Positive, safety-first attitude with effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Organized and detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high-quality in-field work products.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology.
• Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps.
• Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods.

Schedule

• Standard work week is typically Monday through Friday, with overtime and weekend work required based on project demands and weather conditions.
• Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities for winter fieldwork.
• Multi-week field assignments are common.

Pay

Pay range varies by location:

• MN, OH, VT, and various CA/NY areas: $45,500.00 - $63,700.00 annually (pro-rated for part-time roles).

Certain roles are bonus eligible. Compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
