Scrap Pile Inspector

About the role

As a Scrap Inspector, you will be the first point of contact with customers bringing scrap materials into the yard. You will work outside in all weather conditions, inspecting and documenting customer loads, directing traffic, and ensuring compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect incoming customer loads for acceptable and non-acceptable materials.
• Maintain a broad and working knowledge of different types of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
• Identify and grade inbound scrap and reject unacceptable items.
• Direct customer traffic to the appropriate collection sites, including identifying non-conforming items and deducting weight as needed.
• Communicate effectively with customers, ensuring they follow proper procedures for selling recyclable materials.
• Guide semi-trucks in and out of the yard while maintaining an efficient traffic pattern.
• Communicate clearly with the weighmaster and machine operator for each load.
• Sort materials for processing and move items to designated storage areas daily.
• Assist with unloading materials for customers.
• Clean and maintain work area daily.
• Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, and SA Recycling safety, health, and environmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Follow company and OSHA safety procedures.
• Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience.
• 1-year previous general labor in the scrap metal or construction industries preferred.
• Ability to use a computer tablet.
• Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) a plus.
• Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
• Ability to learn new tasks as assigned.
• Must pass a background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screen.

Physical Requirements

• Capable of being on your feet most of the day, standing and walking frequently on uneven ground.
• Ability to lift and carry, perform repetitive motion, and handle physical labor.
• Push and pull occasionally when moving materials.
• Crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment.
• Stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials.
• Reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently.
• Twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually.
• Climb occasionally when obtaining items.
• Manual dexterity required to handle, grasp, and manipulate materials constantly.
• Communicate clearly by speech and hearing continually.
• Possess visual acuity needed for close detail work and documentation.
• Mental dexterity to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness of the environment.
