Genentech · South San Francisco, CA · 3 days ago
Information Technology$121k–$224k/yrFull-time

The Translational Medicine organization at Genentech has a vision to transform patient care through borderless, innovative, and rigorous translational science that will catalyze the development of new medicines, accelerate drug development timelines, and discover new therapeutic strategies. This hands-on, laboratory-based Scientist 3 role leads translational research and discovery efforts in lung and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, collaborating closely with teams across Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) — including Research Oncology, Computational Sciences, and Translational Genomics and Proteomics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments to validate biological and therapeutic hypotheses derived from non-clinical, clinical, and real-world data
  • Synthesize, analyze, and interpret experimental and computational data in collaboration with experts from other functions
  • Elucidate mechanisms of action and therapeutic resistance to tumor microenvironment and tumor targeted therapies (e.g., next-generation checkpoint inhibitors and antibody drug conjugates) to guide patient selection, pharmacodynamic biomarker assessment, combination treatment strategies, and next-generation target identification
  • Identify, evaluate, and validate innovative cell-based, biochemical, and multi-omic assays — including single-cell and functional genomics technologies — to enable scalable hypothesis testing
  • Proactively establish new internal and external collaborations to access emerging technologies, datasets, and analytical methods that fuel translational innovation

Qualifications

  • Education: Ph.D. degree in Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines. Candidates with a BA/BS or MS degree in similar fields, with combined 6+ or 4+ additional years of related experience, respectively, will also be considered
  • Scientific expertise: Deep understanding of cancer biology, cancer immunology, and mechanisms of action and resistance to immunotherapies and/or targeted therapies. Understanding of lung and GI cancer disease biology, tumor–immune interactions, and key oncogenic signaling pathways is advantageous
  • Technical proficiency: Proven ability to independently lead hands-on, lab-based research and to develop, optimize, and apply fit-for-purpose experimental assays using relevant preclinical models and human samples. Multidisciplinary expertise in complementary approaches such as primary immune and/or tumor cell isolation and culture, immune-cell functional and tumor-killing assays, target-engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarker assays, multiparameter flow cytometry, and 2D/3D tumor microenvironment models, including ex vivo and in vivo approaches where appropriate
  • Strong interest in and experience applying emerging translational technologies — such as single-cell and multi-omic profiling, spatial approaches, advanced functional assays, and other novel platforms — to address mechanistic and biomarker questions is highly desirable
  • Possess a rigorous and creative approach to experimental design and problem-solving
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient with analysis of high-throughput data, such as multiomics, single cell and spatial transcriptomics datasets
