Registered School Nurse - Long Term Substitute position in Waterboro, ME.
Qualifications
- Current license in the State of Maine as a Registered Professional Nurse
- Bachelor of Science degree (four year) from an accredited institution
- Valid provisional or professional state certificate to serve as a school nurse
- Completed fingerprinting in accordance with school requirements
- Minimum of two years nursing experience in pediatrics, community health, or as a school nurse
- Current BLS certification
About the Role
To provide health services that ensure the health and safety of students and staff in RSU 57.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain positive relations with students, school personnel, parents, and citizens within scope of practice
- Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to maintain high quality of services
- Demonstrate sound judgment and effective communication skills
- Respect and protect the confidentiality of students, staff, and families
- Work as a member of the district health services team within scope of individual's training
- Understand and comply with school district policies and procedures, state statutes, and limitations
- Provide health assessments, develop and implement health plans for students
- Provide care for illness and injury to students in accordance with written protocols
- Follow standard health practices for school settings as listed by the School Health Manual, Maine Department of Education
- Develop an Individualized Health Plan (IHP) or Medical 504 for each student with special health care needs requiring nursing assessment, intervention, or supervision
- Conduct health assessments, complete each student's health plan, maintain appropriate student health plans, and document student health records
- Educate staff regarding emergency measures required until medical help is available
- Implement the school medication policy and procedure
- Promote control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases
- Provide health information to assist students and families in making health-related decisions in the school setting
- Participate in health aspects of kindergarten pre-registration (if appropriate)
- Participate in medical clearances (physicals, allergies, previous medical conditions, etc.) (if appropriate)
- Participate in in-season return process from sports-related injuries, including doctor clearances and trainer information (if appropriate)
- Serve as a health liaison between school, home, and the community
- Work effectively with individuals, public and private agencies, and other community groups to assure student health needs are met
- Ensure necessary and appropriate medical/health-related resources are available to all responsible for providing health care before a child is placed in the classroom
- Serve as a resource person for classroom teachers on health issues or as a resource for the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team
- Incorporate the care plan into the IEP upon request
- Responsible for case management of medical 504s as appropriate
- Prepare the budget for school health supplies and first aid kits for school settings
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

- Maintain confidentiality related to all aspects of student performance and written or oral records
- Demonstrate respect for the legal and human rights of students
- Meet and follow all laws and regulations at both the state and federal levels
- Follow health and safety procedures established by the district
- Arrive and depart punctually, notifying appropriate personnel about absences and coverage
- Demonstrate loyalty, dependability, integrity, and other ethical standards
- Follow the chain of command for various administrative procedures for student or program concerns
- Observe all RSU 57 policies and related school procedures
Pay
Compensation: $185-$250 per day
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, and lifting
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as climbing stairs, kneeling, crouching, pushing, and pulling
