School Nurse - Substitute
The Registered School Nurse - Substitute position requires a current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Maine, a Bachelor of Science degree, valid state certificate as a school nurse, and at least two years of nursing experience preferably in pediatrics, community health, or as a school nurse. Candidates must also have current BLS certification.
About the role
This role reports to building administration and the superintendent and aims to ensure the health and safety of students and staff in RSU 57. The nurse works as part of the district health services team and collaborates with stakeholders to maintain high-quality services.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to improve service quality.
- Show sound judgment and effective communication skills.
- Respect and protect the confidentiality of students, staff, and families.
- Provide health assessments and develop health plans for students.
- Care for illnesses and injuries to students according to written protocols.
- Implement standard health practices for school settings.
- Develop and maintain Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) or Medical 504s for students with special health care needs.
- Educate staff on emergency measures and the school medication policy.
- Monitor and control communicable diseases through immunization programs and reporting.
- Provide health information to assist students and families in health-related decisions.
- Participate in pre-registration, medical clearances, and return processes from sports-related injuries.
- Serve as a health liaison between school, home, and the community.
- Work with individuals, public, and private agencies to meet student health needs.
- Ensure availability of necessary medical/health resources.
- Prepare budgets for school health supplies and first aid kits.
- Assist classroom teachers and IEP teams on health issues.
- Manage Medical 504 cases as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in Maine.
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution.
- Valid state certificate as a school nurse.
- At least two years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health, or school nursing.
- Current BLS certification.
