School Health Nurse Manager (Public Health Nurse IV)

About the role

The Fairfax County Health Department is seeking a Public Health Nurse II to lead a team of professionals in providing comprehensive school health services. This position includes a $10,000 sign-on bonus for new county employees.

Responsibilities

• Leadership and program oversight of a district office school health team
• Budget responsibilities for capital equipment, personnel, and physical space
• Support activities on population health using quantitative and analytical methods
• Utilize quality improvement and performance management processes
• Collaborate with colleagues to support and enhance school health services
• Work within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to achieve desirable outcomes
• Promote individual and population health by assuring quality and accessibility of services
• Manage human and facility emergencies and perform emergency treatments
• Interpret and apply professional standards of nursing practice, County Health Department policies, and applicable laws and regulations
• Build and develop relationships and partnerships with individuals and entities
• Communicate with clients from varied backgrounds and different situations
• Prepare public health communications, reports, and briefings
• Conduct systematic and objective inquiry or evaluation of public health programs and services
• Apply or introduce technology to facilitate decision-making and support collaboration

Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of nursing theories, principles, practices, methods, processes, and procedures
• Knowledge of human growth and development, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, preventive medicine, epidemiology, and nutrition
• Knowledge of current practices, literature, and trends in public health nursing
• Knowledge of consultation, teaching, and supervision methods and techniques
• Knowledge of documentation, nursing diagnosis, and quality assurance
• Knowledge of medical and legal policies, guidelines, principles, practices, and standards governing public health nursing
• Extensive knowledge of available community resources for referral and follow-up
• Knowledge of planning, implementing, and evaluating public health nursing programs
• Knowledge of budget and financial management principles and practices
• Knowledge of resources planning, management, and utilization
• Knowledge of County personnel policies and practices governing the management and supervision of employees
• Knowledge of management principles, practices, and techniques
• Ability to perform complex technical nursing procedures and use medical equipment
• Ability to manage human and/or facility emergencies and perform emergency treatments
• Ability to interpret and apply professional standards of nursing practice, County Health Department policies, and applicable laws and regulations
• Ability to build and develop relationships and partnerships with individuals and entities
• Ability to relate well to clients from varied backgrounds and different situations
• Ability to manage or diffuse situations involving clients or County staff
• Ability to identify problems and make sound, well-informed, and objective decisions or judgments

• Ability to prepare public health communications, technical and non-technical reports, briefings, testimonies, and other written material

Qualifications

• Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing
• Plus five years of post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education, including three years in a public health/community health setting
• Plus at least one year of supervisory experience
