About the role

The School Custodian III position involves directing the work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school, assigning, laying out, inspecting, and supervising the work of subordinates to ensure buildings and grounds are kept clean and orderly. This role also includes personally performing more difficult maintenance tasks, supervising custodial staff for special events, managing special school equipment, maintaining records, and ensuring security.

Responsibilities

  • Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school
  • Assigns, lays out, inspects, and supervises the work of subordinates to maintain clean and orderly conditions
  • Performs more difficult maintenance work such as plumbing and electrical repairs, and woodwork not requiring journey worker level skills
  • Supervises custodial staff for special school functions
  • Maintains and operates special school equipment like swimming pools, auditoriums, and loudspeaker systems
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants, and lawns
  • Requisitions, receives, stores, and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned
  • Maintains records of supplies dispensed and equipment issued
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and unusual happenings or accidents
  • Keeps daily time sheets
  • Has security responsibility for the school
  • Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours
  • May supervise student help when assigned
  • May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers
  • May perform typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work, grounds maintenance work, and/or general laboring work
  • At least one (1) year of the work experience must be comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service
  • Demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude

Qualifications

General Experience:

  • Progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting, and cleaning of buildings
  • Grounds maintenance work experience including cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping, and raking
  • General laboring experience such as moving materials, furniture, and equipment; loading and unloading trucks; carrying, unloading, and stacking tools and supplies for skilled craftsmen; and digging trenches and ditches
