School Crossing Guard

Fairfax County School crossing guards control traffic to ensure the safe and orderly movement of student pedestrians to and from school. Monitors operation of wink-o-matic school flashing lights during opening and closing times and reports any malfunctions. Reports hazardous traffic conditions at student crossing locations.

About the role

These are part-time positions with limited hours. Positions hired for one crossing work ten hours per week and are not benefit-eligible. Positions covering two or more crossings work 20+ hours per week and are benefit-eligible. Openings are filled on a police district-by-district basis; available locations are listed in each district’s job announcement. This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions at multiple locations.

Responsibilities

• Controls traffic at crossing to allow children to cross safely.
• Places school sentinel signs in the roadway at designated points near crossings and removes them before going off duty.
• Maintains discipline over children to ensure conformance with traffic and crossing regulations; reports children who fail to cooperate.
• Instructs children in the safe and correct way to cross streets and in ways to identify potential traffic hazards.
• Reports accidents, traffic violations, and hazardous conditions.
• Monitors operation of school flashing lights during opening and closing times and reports any malfunctions.

Requirements

• High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, credit check, pre-employment medical evaluation, and tuberculosis test.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in English and another language (including Spanish, Asian/Pacific Islander, Indo-European, and others).
