About the role
The School Counselor reports to Principal April Dockery and works at SILSA. The position is full-time, 11 months, and can be contacted via email at April.Dockery@acsgmail.net or Kimberly.Robinson@acsgmail.net.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with school administrators to establish annual counseling program goals aligned with school improvement priorities.
- Develop, implement, and annually update a comprehensive school counseling plan using student outcome data.
- Utilize attendance, behavior, achievement, graduation, and school climate data to identify student needs and program priorities.
- Communicate counseling program goals, services, and outcomes to students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.
- Maintain resources that support students, families, and school personnel.
- Allocate professional time consistent with ASCA recommendations, with the majority devoted to direct and indirect student services.
- Participate as an active member of school leadership teams, MTSS teams, crisis response teams, and school improvement planning.
- Promote equitable access to academic opportunities, advanced coursework, college and career pathways, and student support services.
- Advocate for systemic improvements that eliminate barriers affecting student success.
- Deliver standards-based classroom instruction aligned with ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors and North Carolina School Counseling Standards.
- Provide developmentally appropriate instruction in academic success, college and career readiness, social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, self-management, digital citizenship, and postsecondary planning.
- Collaborate with educators to integrate student success competencies into the instructional program.
- Aid students in developing and monitoring individualized academic, career, and postsecondary plans.
- Support students with course selection, graduation planning, transition planning, and career exploration.
- Utilize student data to identify needs and monitor progress toward academic and behavioral goals.
- Collaborate with families and staff to support individualized student success planning.
- Provide short-term individual and small group counseling responsive to students' academic, behavioral, career, and social-emotional needs.
- Conduct risk assessments and participate in crisis prevention, intervention, and postvention efforts in accordance with district procedures.
- Consult with families, teachers, administrators, school psychologists, social workers, nurses, and community agencies regarding student concerns.
- Facilitate referrals to school-based and community mental health and support services when appropriate.
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, academic performance, and well-being while coordinating interventions through MTSS.
- Collaborate with educators, administrators, families, and community partners to improve student outcomes.
- Participate in multidisciplinary problem-solving teams, including MTSS, Section 504, IEP, attendance, threat assessment, and school safety teams, as appropriate.
- Promote family engagement through consultation, education, and outreach activities.
- Coordinate community partnerships that enhance student supports and opportunities.
- Utilize technology and data systems to improve counseling services and monitor program effectiveness.
- Participate in ongoing professional learning aligned with district initiatives and professional standards.
- Adhere to all federal and state laws, Board policies, ethical standards, and professional practices governing school counseling.
- Serve as a systems leader who advocates for educational equity and student success.
- Identify and address systemic barriers affecting student achievement, attendance, behavior, and postsecondary success.
- Foster inclusive school environments that promote belonging, cultural responsiveness, and positive relationships.
- Collaborate with school leadership to improve school climate and student engagement.
- Promote student voice and leadership opportunities throughout the school community.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in School Counseling.
- North Carolina School Counselor License.
- Knowledge of ASCA National Model and North Carolina School Counseling Standards.
- Experience working with diverse student populations preferred.
