School Bus Driver - CDL Required

Every school day begins and ends with a trusted bus driver. Chapel Hill ISD is looking for dependable, safety-focused professionals who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students. As a school bus driver, you will do more than operate a bus—you will welcome students each morning, provide a safe ride home and help create a positive school experience from the moment they step aboard.

About the role

Provide safe, reliable and efficient transportation for assigned students while creating a welcoming and respectful environment. Complete required reports and inspections, maintain accurate department records and support the overall goals of the Chapel Hill ISD Transportation Department.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Current Commercial Driver’s License
  • Current school bus driver certification
  • Ability to pass required TEA/DOT physical examinations
  • Ability to meet mandatory drug and alcohol testing requirements
  • Acceptable driving and criminal history

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to read, write and understand English
  • Strong commitment to student safety
  • Ability and desire to work positively with students, families, staff and fellow drivers
  • Dependable, punctual and attentive to detail
  • Professional and courteous communication skills
  • Ability to follow established routes, schedules, procedures and safety regulations
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment under pressure

Responsibilities

Drive Safely

  • Obey all traffic laws and district transportation procedures
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules
  • Conduct required daily pre-trip inspections
  • Report mechanical concerns promptly and accurately
  • Monitor fuel, oil, coolant and tire-pressure levels
  • Use loading lights and stop arms according to established safety procedures
  • Follow proper student loading and unloading practices
  • Remain with the bus during a mechanical breakdown until assistance arrives

Support Students

  • Take a personal interest in the safety and well-being of every student
  • Create a welcoming, respectful and orderly environment aboard the bus
  • Treat all students fairly and consistently
  • Follow district student-management procedures
  • Make and enforce seating assignments when necessary
  • Report student-conduct concerns promptly and accurately
  • Establish and follow bus stops with student safety and convenience in mind
  • Transport only authorized students and riders

Represent Chapel Hill ISD

  • Communicate respectfully with students, families, coworkers and school personnel
  • Provide courteous and professional radio communication
  • Build positive and cooperative working relationships
  • Assist trip sponsors and riders in a friendly and helpful manner
  • Project a positive image of Chapel Hill ISD in the community
  • Maintain confidentiality and conduct district business professionally and ethically

Maintain the Bus and Required Records

  • Keep the assigned bus clean and ready for students
  • Sweep the bus daily and wash it at least once per month
  • Complete required reports accurately and on time
  • Provide complete and accurate information during district business
  • Follow all district, state and federal policies, regulations and safety procedures
  • Perform additional duties related to the position as assigned

  • School bus
  • Radio communication equipment
  • Other transportation-related equipment as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Prolonged sitting with occasional bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, twisting and reaching
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing less than 15 pounds
  • Exposure to changing weather, traffic and road conditions
  • Work may include early mornings, afternoons, irregular hours and occasional travel
  • Frequent interruptions and situations requiring patience, sound judgment and emotional control
  • Regular and prompt attendance is required
