About the role
The Scheduler / Dispatcher performs day-to-day scheduling and dispatch activities for the Patient Transportation Department. They schedule clients for transportation to and from medical appointments while maintaining communication with drivers to ensure on-time transport. The role involves evaluating existing driver schedules and routes, making adjustments as necessary for efficient and cost-effective daily operations.
The Scheduler / Dispatcher maintains proficiency in departmental software, telephones, radios, protocols, policies, and procedures. They complete assigned reports and transport documents and assist the Supervisor with data collection for bi-weekly, monthly, and on-demand departmental reports.
If the Scheduler/Dispatcher meets the preferred certification requirements for Patient Transportation Specialist, they may occasionally drive one of the department’s fleet vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Schedule and dispatch transportation for patients to and from medical appointments.
- Maintain communication with drivers to ensure on-time transport.
- Evaluate and adjust driver schedules and routes for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Operate and maintain proficiency in departmental software, telephones, radios, and related tools.
- Complete assigned reports, transport documents, and assist with data collection for departmental reports.
- Occasionally drive fleet vehicles if certified as a Patient Transportation Specialist.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- One year of scheduling and/or dispatching experience preferred.
- Experience in public transportation is preferred.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with ‘P’ endorsement preferred. If maintaining a CDL, proof of annual MDOT inspection and physical is required.
- Must meet minimum requirements determined by the Mississippi Department of Transportation for staff involved in the Elderly and Disabled Transportation Program if maintaining a CDL.

Physical Demands
- Moderately active work involving sitting, moving about the office and facility, and traveling within the SRHS service area.
- Frequent requirement to exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects, including the human body.
- Exposure to body fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
- Repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers (e.g., operating a computer keyboard).
- Ability to perceive sound at normal speaking levels and make fine discriminations in sound.
- Close visual acuity and ability to adjust focus between computer monitors and printed materials.
- Ability to remain active for extended periods without undue fatigue.
- Flexibility to work assigned schedules, including potential changes for off days, shifts, or weekends.
