Sanitation Supervisor (Yard Waste Collections)

Operations Management

Plan, coordinate, and adjust collection routes to maximize operational efficiency, balance route density, and ensure timely yard waste collection.

Train and mentor drivers on route procedures, safety practices, and performance expectations.

Conduct field inspections to monitor service quality, route compliance, and employee performance. Assist on open routes as needed to maintain uninterrupted service delivery.

Technology Utilization

Use technology to manage daily collection routes by monitoring route efficiency, making route adjustments, updating customer addresses, and ensuring accurate service information.

Create, analyze, and reconcile operational and billing reports; maintain customer billing records; and use software applications to support data analysis, reporting, and informed operational decision-making.

Cart Delivery Program

Support the cart delivery program by maintaining and reconciling cart inventory data, scheduling cart deliveries and repairs, and ensuring billing records are complete, accurate, and processed in a timely manner.

Equipment Maintenance

Inspect collection vehicles to ensure proper functioning, coordinate repairs, and ensure daily maintenance protocols are followed.

Customer Service

Investigate and resolve citizen complaints, missed pickups, and inquiries related to yard waste collection.

Identify root causes of recurring service issues, develop and implement corrective action and process improvement plans, monitor the effectiveness of implemented solutions, and collaborate with staff to enhance service quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure crews comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and municipal waste guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and five years of experience in solid waste collection, public works, supervisory roles, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of waste management operations, route planning, mechanical equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency, with the ability to create, analyze, and reconcile data; generate, interpret, and present reports; manage cart records and databases; and utilize Microsoft Office and other software applications to support operational and administrative functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify root causes of operational inefficiencies and develop and implement process improvement plans, using data to support decision-making and identify opportunities to improve service delivery, productivity, and performance.

Physical Requirements

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force;
  • work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions,

  • work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
  • work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather) and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
  • work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
